2013 in review

3 Jan

I saw this survey on another blog that I follow and since, hello I had AOL in the 90s and I love surveys, I thought I’d give this one a go. I would love to hear your thoughts, comments, and resolutions for 2014!

1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
I got married and traveled to quite a few new places.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Yes! My New Years’ resolution was to start a blog and keep it going for 1 year. My posts were sometimes infrequent, but they were there I tell you!

2014 Resolutions

  • As always, work out.
  • Spend more time in the kitchen.
  • Eat better.
  • Try new things.
  • Travel.
  • Meet new people.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes, my lifelong best friend gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Tatum Leigh!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes our furbaby, Bubba.

5. What countries did you visit?
The Bahamas, Scotland, France, Amsterdam.

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
A house of our own! The urge to nest is real, people, with or without babies.

7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
May 4, 2013..the day I vomited outside a church and then married my best friend. (just kidding about the vomit but it was a close call)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Planning a huge wedding, then being able to completely separate myself from said-wedding and enjoy my honeymoon!

9. What was your biggest failure?
I did not stay on track with my workouts. As a matter of fact, I went to the gym almost daily until about March…didn’t see the gym again until around November! Yikes!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Other than chronic allergies that threaten to kill me with a change of wind direction, I was good.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Not the best question for an online shopping addict…everything is the best

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My parents and close friends went above and beyond for me this year.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Hmm another tough one.. I don’t think that I had any sort of lasting relationship with anyone whose behavior made me appalled or depressed.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Bridesmaid dresses/wedding dresses… I was in 3 weddings this year and attended 7!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
EURO TRIP! Agh, so much fun!

I. happier or sadder?
Happier! And definitely less stressed out!

II. thinner or fatter?
Pretty much the same.

Taken time to unwind and relax. We were on the go pretty much every other weekend of 2013.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Stressed out (wedding planning, budgeting, moving)

At my parents’ lake house on Canyon Lake

21. Who had the biggest influence on your life in 2013?
Charlie, since he made me change my last name

22. Did you fall in love in 2013?

23. How many one-night stands?

24. What was your favorite TV program?
The Goldbergs. Oh God, the Goldbergs. Barry is my spirit animal.

25. Do you dislike anyone now that you didn’t dislike this time last year?
I don’t think so.

26. What was the best book you read?
Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. Couldn’t put it down! Also read the Game of Thrones and Outlander series.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Oh there were far too many to list. I pride myself on falling in love with songs 4-5 months before they show up in Apple commercials.

28. What did you want and get?

29. What did you want and not get?
A house… had to leave something for 2014.

30. Best movies this year?
I’m not much of a movie buff… I did laugh all the way through This Is The End though!

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 27 this year and spent the day stuck in the Sacramento airport coming home from a business trip. Ate my birthday dinner on the floor of the Las Vegas airport at 11:00 pm, satisfying all around.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Again… a house!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
Loved some trends, loathed others. Faux fur vests – yes. High heeled sneakers – can’t do it.

34. What kept you sane?
Daily phone rants with Mom

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Franco, Rogen and Hill just get me.

Why anyone would make banning gay marriage their life’s work is beyond me.

37. Who did you miss?
I always miss my far-away family and friends.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Loved spending time with the Scotland gang!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:

Things work out the way they are supposed to. Don’t spend time stressing, spend time doing!

40. One word or sentence to describe how you feel about 2013:
Such an amazing year, ready to conquer 2014!

Happy New Year, friends!

back with the fire of a thousand suns

15 Oct

Well… it’s been almost a year since my last blog post. Life has been crazy! In the time that I’ve been away (from the blog, not away from life), I got married, traveled to the Bahamas, traveled to Europe (Scotland, Paris & Amsterdam), said goodbye to our sweet boxer boy, Bubba, moved, and in the midst of it all…sprouted a few new gray hairs. 2013 has been a ROLLER COASTER and I promise to update with wedding & Europe ish soon.

It’s Tuesday.. so fitting that I return to the blog just in time for a round of Tuesday tags. Here’s what’s been in my earbuds this week:

“Hurricane” – MS MR

“The Wire” – HAIM

“Stompa” – Serena Ryder

“The Mother We Share” – CHVRCHES

“Scare Me” – New Beat Fund

“Afraid” – The Neighbourhood

“The Ceiling” – The Wild Feathers

“All Things at Once” – Tired Pony

“Lightning Bolt” – Jake Bugg

“Land of Gathering” – The Ceremonies

zz ward – til the casket drops album review & favorite lyrics

20 Nov

In lieu of Tuesday Tags this week… I’m focusing on ZZ Ward’s new album Til the Casket Drops. Why, you ask? Because that’s all I’ve been listening to, literally, for over a week straight. I cannot get enough! This chick is like Adele if Adele wore leather and rode around on motorcycles smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey out of a flask and shit. Or if Adele and Amy Winehouse had a baby. Basically, AMAZING.

This album has everything I look for in a song, in every song. The lyrics are pure genius. So instead of actually reviewing each song -since I obviously think they are all the best song in the world- I’m just going to put some of my favorite lyrics from each.. I’m such a lyrics person you guys. Said every preteen girl ever. Anyway, here we go!

1. Til the Casket Drops

The moon was just a sliverLight was fading
The war was on its wayAnd we were waiting
You asked me, how long I’d stay by your side
And so I answeredWith only just one reply
‘Til the casket drops

2. Put the Gun Down

I got ten fingers to the sky,
My back to the wall, my white flag high
Hair, lips, just like a gun,
She’s got silver bullets on her tongue

3. Blue Eyes Blind

All I know is you pull me through,
I don’t wanna see nothing if I ain’t seeing you,
You’re the yellow stars up in my silver sky,
You are a ray, ray, you even make my blue eyes blind,
All of the lights went down when you came with me,
Now there’s a million diamonds that I just can’t see

4. Home

I’m crazy, I get mean,
But baby, you adore me,
Shut it down, I get mine,
My soldier right by side,
My fire, you feed it,
Give it to me when I need it,
I’m all yours, so take me,
Good God, this love’s amazing

5. Cryin’ Wolf (ft. Kendrick Lamar)

Breaking my door down when I left the lock open,
There ain’t much left to be broken,
Your flies are wet, then you’re soaking,
It’s like the devil just jumped up in your clothes,
He put on your shoes and rolled

6. Save My Life

Cut me out from the cold,
This young heart is getting old,
Save my life, set me free,
Yes or no is all I need,
You don’t want me, darling, let me know,
Just say goodbye and I’ll go

7. Last Love Song

Take these roses and this Jameson, oh no,
Find a subway that I can sit in, oh no,
Buy a one-way out of this city,
Everything that I need, got it with me

8. Lil Darlin (ft. The O’Mys)

Oh, please, please, please,
Quit dragging my heart through them coals,
Oh, please, please, please,
Stop trying to fix it ’cause, baby, it’s broke,
When it’s late at night and you call me,
‘Cause I’ve got another man fixing my blues,
You should never, never worry ’bout nothing, baby,
‘Cause I’ll never love someone new the way I love you

9. Move Like You Stole It

The world ain’t ending, but it might as well be,
I’ll rock you like the sea,
Buildings ain’t crumblin’, but they might as well be,
So let’s not think and just,
Move like you stole it

10. Criminal (ft. Freddie Gibbs)

I toss and turn, got the sheets untucked,
You broke right in, yeah, you stole, you took,
With dirty fingerprints, you no-good crook,
You shatter my heart like a Tiffany glass,
I knew from the start he was a thief in a mask,
And now I’m alone, cleaning up his mess,
There ain’t nothin’ left,
He’s just a criminal

11. If I Could Be Her

She’s got her daddy’s credit card
I play for dollars down on Diamond Boulevard
If I had her heels on I would never do you wrong
She treats you like a patient
With the lies she’s got you on

12. Charlie Ain’t Home

I dig my fingertips into your back,
Till the pictures break and the floorboards crack,
Oh, my tongue is a silver key,
Swimmin’ deep in a sinner’s sea

13. 365 Days

Drop your keys from six stories,
Shout out, “It’s raining green,”
Don’t tell lies in heaven or an angel will get mean,
Diamonds and white gold watches,
Watch how fast they will soar,
You always said you wanted to give back to the poor

Now that it’s very obvious that I wasn’t lying about listening to this album on repeat, I suggest you go download it! 🙂 Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

easy mexican stir fry tacos (a la leftovers)

14 Nov

Last week, Charlie and I headed down to his mom’s house in Zapata for an engagement party that she threw for us. We got there Wednesday night and were able to spend some good quality time with her before everyone started arriving for the weekend.

The party was on Saturday night, so we had a good three days to relax and prepare. Wouldn’t you know that I woke up at 5:00 am Saturday morning with the most intense stomach virus I’ve ever had in all of my 26 years. I literally threw up all day! My parents came to get me and took me to their hotel room so I wouldn’t be in the way (see: infecting everyone I came in contact with), and I slept until 4:00 pm. When I woke up, I was able to stand and walk (huge improvement) so I mustered up every bit of strength that I had left and got ready for our party. I don’t know how I did it, but I managed to stay from 6:30-11:30!! Pretty impressive. Did I eat? No. Did I drink? No. Did I stand for 5 hours without passing out or throwing up? Hell yes I did! I was so so thankful to Charlie’s mom for everything she did for us and I just wouldn’t have been able to stand it if I had to miss out. The set up was gorgeous and her backyard was the perfect backdrop!

Party Set Up (pre-guests)

With my sister and brother 🙂 Don’t I look awesome? Not pale at all!

The party was a success and I’m so glad I was able to be there! Wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

I ended up staying home from work on Monday as I was still feeling pretty crappy, but by Tuesday I was feeling a bit better. Better…but not well enough to make a meal from scratch. Plus, we’d been out of town for five days and had almost nothing in our refrigerator. Luckily, God bless her, Charlie’s mom had sent us home with a TON of leftover fajita meat from the party. Charlie and I brainstormed for about 15 seconds and then decided to just throw some shit in a pan and see how it turned out. I didn’t take many pictures, because I really had extremely low hopes for this one….TOO BAD IT TURNED OUT AMAZING!!

Easy Mexican Stir Fry Tacos (a la leftovers)

Makes about 5 Stir Fry Tacos

2 cups prepared white rice

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 cup diced beef fajita (already cooked)

1/2 cup diced chicken fajita (already cooked)

1/4 cup diced onion

1/4 cup oaxaca cheese, crumbled

Elvis Cayenne Hot Sauce (you can use any hot sauce, but this is our FAVORITE! You can get it here)

Adobo seasoning

lime juice

1 avocado

In a pan, add the olive oil. Heat over medium temp until warm. Add the onion and sautee until golden. Add beef and chicken fajita, and sprinkle with Adobo seasoning. Add the Elvis Hot Sauce & oaxaca cheese crumbles. Stir until warmed through. Add the rice and stir until warm. Slice your avocado and place in a tortilla, fill with stir fry. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and add more hot sauce to taste. Add some lime juice and ka-chow! You’re ready to eat.

It doesn’t look like much… but we cleaned the pan with a fork. It was awesome! You can add a bunch of different ingredients to this and I think it will always turn out pretty good. You can’t really go wrong with meat, cheese, rice and hot sauce! Enjoy!

tuesday tags & mozilla firefox

6 Nov

Holy mother, can you believe it’s already November?! It feels like just yesterday that Charlie and I were falling (literally) all over the dance floor and having the time of our lives on New Year’s Eve…and now…November. It just doesn’t seem right! Probably because it’s still 80 degrees outside. But what can ya do? The holidays are upon us!

Last week, my company held our annual costume contest. We are a software development company, and the costumes are usually pretty funny and right on theme with the work that we do. This year, I chose to dress up as Mozilla Firefox (as in the web browser).

Hehehe…While my costume may have been lost on strangers during trick or treating with my godson and his big brother, my coworkers got it! 🙂 Unfortunately… I lost to an oompa loompa. Is there no justice in this world? After work, I went to my best friend’s house to go trick or treating with her little ninja turtles!

…Seriously? How cute are they??? They kill me! Okay, on to the Tuesday Tags!

“I’m Amazed” –My Morning Jacket

“Three Marlenas” –The Wallflowers (throwback ya’ll!)

“Norwegian Wood” –The Beatles (what what? throwback x2!)

“Queen of California” –John Mayer

“Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby” –Counting Crows

“The Pretender” –Jackson Browne

“Work Around It” –Them Swoops

“Land of Hope and Dreams” –Bruce Springsteen (I have a special place in my heart for Bruce. His voice just screams “America” to me.)

“Follow Me” -Muse

“This Ladder is Ours” –The Joy Formidable

I will leave you guys with a very sweet picture of Bella.

Awww, cuddle bug 🙂

tuesday tags (and the things)

30 Oct

Halloween Part I, complete! I love when Halloween falls in the middle of the week, because you essentially get two weekends worth of costumed debauchery. This past Saturday, Charlie and I went to a triple birthday/costume party at his cousin Becca’s house.

She did it right, ya’ll! There were decorations and finger food..not to mention a Dos XX keg and a margarita machine. Dos-a-ritas anyone? Yes please. Kegstands? Alright, fine. Everyone got super into it with their costumes! I loved it! Charlie and I dressed up as Thing 1 and Thing 2:

It was a little cold, so I was thankful that I was showing absolutely NO skin! Haha, the perks of getting older 😉

I got the iron-on Thing 1 and Thing 2 transfers from Top Iron Ons.. they have a HUGE selection and they arrived super quick. For the rest of my costume, I got my red leotard and capri leggings from American Apparel. My tutu is from Party City. My boot covers are totally homemade and lasted only as long as the party did! haha The wig and tophat were Amazon finds and they were both super cheap (that wig itched like hell though).

All in all, our costumes were a hit! On Wednesday, we have a costume contest at my office. Since I can’t bring Charlie to work with me (unfortunately, because I think that would be fun), I had to come up with a different costume. Stay tuned for the big reveal 😉

On to the good stuff! This week’s Tuesday Tags:

“Mushaboom” –Feist

“Stubborn Love” –Lumineers

“Sultans of Swing” –Dire Straits

“Champion” –The Chevin

“Get Gone” –White Arrows

“Optimistic” –Radiohead

“Waiting” –The Whigs

“The Underdog” -Spoon

“I Want You To (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To)” –Weezer

That’s all for today!

23 Oct

Well folks, the costume has been perfected, the bridesmaids dress fittings have been scheduled, my wedding dress has arrived and all that’s left to do today is the weekly Tuesday Tag-fest. I found myself going through the music archives this week and busting out some sweet older tunes to throw into the mix of newer music. See what you think!

“Hang Me Up To Dry” –Cold War Kids

“Put the Gun Down” –ZZ Ward

“Where the Kids Are” –Blondfire

“Wild” –Royal Teeth

“Default” –Django Django (this is a fun one)

“Madness” –Muse…still hasn’t gotten old! We tried to figure out how we could use this as the song for our first dance… but all attempts at dancing without waving our arms around our heads were a fail.

“Free” –Twin Atlantic

“Black River Killer” –Blitzen Trapper

“Piano Man” –Billy Joel

“Sweet Disposition” –The Temper Trap

Sidenote — I was told that MySpace is making a comeback. Could this be true?!!!? My God, I would just love to reactivate and relive years 18-20….maybe not. Baha!

16 Oct

Halloween is almost heeeeere!!! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! I love Halloween. Even though I’m a certifiable adult(ish), I love dressing up and throwing a few back during the first holiday of the season. Charlie, not so much. Actually, not at all. It has been HELL trying to convince him to even dress up! He’s a little Scrooge when it comes to Halloween. After throwing all of my wonderful couples costumes ideas out the window (Mario & Peach, Ringmaster & Lion –couldn’t do this one because my costume would include a whip which somehow shows ownership? who knows, but I love him–, Popeye & Olive Oyl), he finally agreed to dress up as Thing 1. That’s right. He will be wearing a red tshirt and a blue wig. And that’s it. Whomp Whomp Whomppppp! Luckily he makes up for his lack of Halloween fervor with like, a bunch of other awesome attributes. Pictures of our (amazing) costumes will be included in a later post, so keep your eyes peeled!

Now, on to this weeks Tuesday Tags:

If I Wanted Someone” -Dawes (SO good.. seriously)

Better Weather” -Good Old War

Ocean Breathless Salty” -Modest Mouse

Headlights” -Morning Parade

Dope Nose” -Weezer

An Honest Mistake” -The Bravery

Barton Hollow” -The Civil Wars

My Oh My” -Tristan Prettyman (although she clearly spells her name wrong.. where’s the Y, friend?)

It’s Nice to Be Alive” -Ball Park Music

Ghosts” -The Head and The Heart

Any tuneage you feel inclined to share? Let me know in the comments!

10 Oct

Well, the funny thing about this week’s Tuesday Tags is that .. it’s actually Wednesday. 🙂 That’s right, it’s only round 2 and I’ve already managed to miss the boat! Anyway, here are some sweet jams that I’ve been listening to this week:

“Harbour Lights” –A Silent Film

Tightrope” –Walk the Moon

“Come Home” –Chappo

“Old White Lincoln” –The Gaslight Anthem

“The Rifle’s Spiral” –The Shins

turkey meatballs

8 Oct

Whew! This weekend was a total whirlwind! Thursday night, Charlie and I went to Bastrop to have dinner with one of my best friends and her husband (we ate at Bastrop Brewhouse…best cheeseburger I’ve ever had, hands down) and then spent the night at my sister’s house in Austin. We woke up early Friday morning and got on the road to Dallas for Charlie’s cousin’s commitment ceremony. Good thing I checked the weather before we left, because Dallas got hit with a huge cold front! It literally went from 85 degrees to 50 overnight. Brr!!

The ceremony was gorgeous. It was held at Maple Manor and had a great rustic feel to it. I had only been to Dallas once before this, and I fell in love with it! We stayed at the Melrose Warwick, a super cool, vintage-y hotel. I loved the style of the hotel and I especially enjoyed the bar downstairs called The Library!

Ruben & Jamie had a photo booth set up so, of course, we took advantage of it. Here are some of my faves:

We had so much fun!

We woke up early (and just a tiny bit hungover) Sunday morning and hit the road back to San Antonio. We got to take the new toll road for the first time and were psyched that it cut 45 minutes out of our trip!

Needless to say, when we finally made it home I was in no mood to cook. I convinced Charlie to stop at HEB (this is a feat in and of itself.. the man HATES grocery stores) because I had a craving for the turkey meatballs my mom used to get and I had my heart set on meatball subs. Unfortunately, the whole “I’m in no mood to cook” thing took a turn for the worse (worst?? which one is it?) when I couldn’t find the turkey meatballs (or any other already prepared meatballs for that matter). I ended up Googling a bunch of turkey meatball recipes while standing in the middle of the frozen foods aisle and putting bits and pieces together. The results were amazing!!

Turkey Meatballs

Makes around 14 large meatballs

1 1/4-1 1/2 lbs ground turkey

1 Tbs chopped fresh basil

1 Tbs chopped fresh oregano

1/2 small sweet onion, diced

2 eggs

1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs

1/2 cup heavy cream

garlic salt

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

1 Tbs butter

In a bowl, mix the turkey meat, herbs, and onion. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper and garlic salt. Add the eggs, cream, and bread crumbs. Mix, mix, mix! (By mix, I mean mash it up with your hands. Obviously)

Use your hands to form meatballs. Place the meatballs on a plate or a pan (I put mine on a foil-covered cookie sheet) and dust them with flour. To do this, I just rubbed flour all over my hands and then rolled the meatballs in my palms until they were lightly covered. Heat the oil and butter in a skillet. Let the butter cook over medium heat until it’s a golden brown, about 5 minutes. Then, brown the meatballs on all sides. This can get a little tricky. I used three different kitchen utensils before I finally decided the spatula worked best. Remember, you are only browning the meatballs this way, not cooking them through. Once the meatballs are brown, you can finish them off by roasting or baking them or by putting them in a pasta sauce and letting them simmer. I put the meatballs into a large jar of our favorite store bought pasta sauce and let them simmer for 35 minutes over medium heat.

You can do a lot of things with turkey meatballs. Stick toothpicks in them to make yummy appetizers, or do what I did and make meatball subs!

I just added a slice of mozzarella cheese, some more fresh basil and parmesan and stuffed everything into a sub roll!
